Collegiate Rowing 101

1)  Sign up for Winter Conditioning and ask Coach Greg Harvie to post your erg scores with US Rowing this winter.  You need to have a membership number for US Rowing.  Go to www.usrowing.org to get a membership online.  You need to let Greg know if you want him to post your erg scores!!

2)  Keep your grade point average as high as you can!  You need to have good recommendations from teachers, as well as your coaches.

3)  Take the SAT three times DURING YOUR JUNIOR YEAR!!   Take the ACT three times as well, so that you can get the highest possible scores to submit to college coaches.    Do not wait until fall of your senior year.   College rowing coaches want to see your SAT scores and your high school transcript (through the end of the junior year,) in August and September of your senior year so they can "walk" you through admissions and get your pre-admitted. If you are already a senior.......... it is not too late.  Go to college web sites and market yourself to the rowing coaches and talk to Coach Greg Harvie and let him know NOW that you would like to row in college.  He knows of lots of good programs out there and can help steer you in the right direction.

4)  Talk to Head Coach Greg Harvie and let him know that you want to row in college!  He is the one the colleges contact to get names of prospective rowers and he is the one they call to get recommendations on you!

5)  Show commitment and a really good work ethic .  You need to be coachable, cooperative, and show total commitment despite the weather, despite being sick, despite whatever else is going on in your life or with the team........total sportsmanship and hard work and good attendance is a must!!  You need to have a really good relationship and reputation with your coach!

6)  Participate in the indoor regattas .  College coaches look at these results and this where you often get your best erg times.

7)  YOU NEED TO GO OUT THERE AND MARKET YOURSELF !!  COLLEGE OFFERS USUALLY DON'T COME TO YOU...........YOU HAVE TO SEEK THEM OUT!!  BE AGGRESSIVE AND GET YOUR NAME OUT THERE!!  Check out college web sites and especially their Athletic web pages.  Go to the women's or the men's rowing page, of the colleges you are interested in and contact as many coaches by email as you can.  Introduce yourself, tell about your background and interest in their school and their rowing program.  They will email you back and ask questions and send you information.  YOU NEED TO GO OUT THERE AND MARKET YOURSELF!!  COLLEGE OFFERS USUALLY DON'T COME TO YOU...........YOU HAVE TO SEEK THEM OUT!!  BE AGGRESSIVE AND GET YOUR NAME OUT THERE!!

There are numerous resources available for student-athletes who are interested in rowing at the collegiate level. In the file cabinets at the Indoor Educational Facility, there are tons of program guides and recruiting information from various collegiate rowing programs throughout the county. Please feel free to browse the information if you are interested in a specific school or program. Also, visit that team’s web page. The web page will often have a “prospective student-athlete questionnaire.” If you fill out the questionnaire(s), you have made yourself known to that prospective coach/team.
